Chapter 33: Post 9/11 Transfer of Benefits

General Overview

The Post-9/11 GI Bill®, effective August 1, 2009, is the most comprehensive educational benefit package since the original GI Bill® was signed into law.

Basic Eligibility

  • Served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001.
  • Honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.

To Enroll

The veteran must apply for the GI Bill and related benefits through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

Monthly Enrollment Verification

For students using their Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits and receiving MHA and/or kicker payments, monthly enrollment verification is required at the end of each month during their term to continue receiving payments. Please call the Education Call Center (ECC) at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) to update your information. This ensures you receive the latest email updates on monthly enrollment verification and are able to opt-in to enrollment verification by text message.

Required Forms for UC Davis

  • Submit the following documentation to the Office of the University Registrar through the OUR Veterans Portal:
    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
    • Copy of DD-214 (Member 4 Copy)
    • Intake form
    • Academic Plan Form (APF) - submitted every term
  • If you used VA benefits at a prior institution, you are required to complete and return a VA form (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training) to the UC Davis Veterans Success Center. Veterans use VA Form 22-1995.
